Sport imitating life

Sport imitating life Fireworks light up Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Stadium during the opening ceremony of the 2018 Asian

The recent 2018 Asian Games, held in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, and the capital of South Sumatra Province, Palembang, were an unmitigated success – and not just because Indonesia took in a record haul of gold medals. The Games went off without a hitch in everything from organization to transportation, ticket sales, security and lively spectators from around the world. Inside the stadiums, on the courts and mats, in the rings and around the cycling and running tracks, more than 11,000 athletes representing 45 countries put on incredible displays in numerous events. It was a testament to their hard training and dedication. Yet these performances, in their own way, were also uncannily similar to the daily movements of average Indonesians outside the arenas. Daily work, cultural rituals and various other basic physical activities in many ways mimic the moves of these highly trained athletes. It takes a keen eye to see it, but the camera never lies. Enjoy.
